The WBC Lightweight Champion Shakur Stevenson won’t be fighting in the October 12 Beterbiev vs. Bivol undercard. He was set to fight against Joe Cordina to defend his title.
When the co-main event was announced, there were many controversies, and dis-satisfaction among the fans. People thought that Joe Cordina was not a good match for Stevenson. Stevenson’s popularity among the US boxing fans had been decreasing, and the fight wouldn’t help to bring any positive impact on the fans.
But during these controversies, Stevenson pulled out from the event, as he had to undergo hand surgery followed by an injury. According to sources, Stevenson won’t be able to participate in any fights till 2025. The fighter could raise some popularity by defeating the former champion, but that chance is also diminished.
Stevenson signed a 2 fight contract with Matchroom Promotional, but he won’t be able to participate in the first fight of the two. Shakur tore his tendon in his practice camp. At first, the injury didn’t seem severe, but after a scan, he had to go through immediate surgery.
Stevenson said on X, “God works in mysterious ways the thru the ups and downs I’m steady hungry and motivated more then ever 2025 gone be my best year yet. Surgery went great it’s a minor set back for a major comeback.”
So, the Shakur Stevenson vs Joe Cordina fight won’t be happening this year. The main event, is where Artur Beterbiev who is currently holding the WBC, IBF, and WBO light-heavyweight titles will fight against WBA (Super) and IBO light-heavyweight titles holder Dmitry Bivol.
